Towards Automatic Analysis of Online Discussions among Hong Kong Students

To help teachers monitor students’ online discussions, researchers have proposed automatic or semi-automatic methods in analyzing discussion threads. However, very few existing studies have focused on discussion forums posted by Hong Kong students. This pilot study attempts to bridge the gap by applying generic data mining techniques on forum discussions generated by Hong Kong students. Findings of this study will shed light on the potential usefulness of automatic discussion analysis in the Hong Kong context. Experiments on two data mining techniques and results are presented, as well as further analyses to be done in the near future.
